Getting to the Jalón valley
The Jalón valley lies a good 2,000 km from the Netherlands, in the Comunidad Valenciana, in the province of Alicante, in the Marina Alta region. Most people therefore choose to come by plane. The region can be reached from both Alicante and Valencia airports; each is about an hour’s drive away.
Getting around locally

Public transport is very sparse here:
- There is a train connection from Valencia to Gandia, and one from Alicante to Calpe, Benissa and Denia.
- A bus does run through the valley from Calpe and Denia, past Jalón, Alcalalí and Parcent, but only a few times a day at most.
- From Alicante airport you can easily take the BeniConnect shuttle bus to Calpe or Ondara.
We have no experience with it ourselves, but there is also a taxi company in the valley: Taxi Parcent. There are taxis in Denia as well.
Shops
For everyday shopping you can go to a mini-supermarket and two bakeries in the village of Alcalalí itself. The petrol station sells bottled water, among other things.
- You will find a larger supermarket in Jalón and in Orba (Mas-y-mas).
- Benissa has several supermarkets.
- There is a large covered shopping centre in Ondara.
Alcalalí also has several restaurants, a pharmacy, a tabac, a hairdresser, a cash machine, a petrol station and a shop for all sorts of practical things (household, garden, kitchen, beach, writing and drawing supplies). The Jalon Valley Help second-hand shop is open every morning too, selling clothes, puzzles and books (sometimes in Dutch).

Clinica Benissa, +34 – 96 573 31 57. Besides Spanish they also speak Dutch, English, German and French. For a GP, a dentist, and emergencies too.
